Ovais Naqvi is a Managing Director at Abraaj and is Head of Market Engagement, responsible for group-wide knowledge management, brand and marketing strategy, portfolio companies’ synergy programing and stakeholder engagement. He has worked at global level in a number of core areas for the firm, including APAG’s activities that covered:
• Global best practice and value creation programs across 150+ portfolio businesses
• Leading execution efforts across commercial (sales, marketing and business development) in Abraaj’s consumer and technology investments
• Creating synergy by facilitating collaborative, shared services and marketplace opportunities between the investee companies through the ARENA platform
Mr. Naqvi has helped lead various commercial, route-to-market, consumer insight and brand-building programs across over 15 portfolio businesses including Fan Milk International, Hepsiburada.com, Careem, K-Electric, Acurio and others. Between 2008 and 2010, Mr. Naqvi had line management responsibility at K-Electric, one of Abraaj’s largest portfolio investments with revenues of over US$1.5bn. His operating responsibilities as Chief Engagement Officer included brand development, internal cultural realignment, stakeholder engagement and ESG programming.
Mr. Naqvi also co-leads the firm’s New Economy Task Force, supports a number of tech-enabled businesses at Abraaj, including having led the team that built and spun-out the early stage entrepreneurship platform Wamda.com. He is also on the LP Advisory Council of Wamda Capital, an early-stage investment fund.
Previous to Abraaj, Mr. Naqvi has had a career in Europe and the UK in the financial services, marketing services, media and content industries.
In 2016, Mr. Naqvi was appointed as a member of the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council for Innovation & Entrepreneurship. He also serves on the MENA Advisory Board of the Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Council. He was educated at the London School of Economics (LSE).
