“A cab driver once told me that one should never listen to music while driving. If a person crashed while listening to music, he said, it would be the last thing on her tongue as she died. Her last utterance could be the stupid lyrics of a pop song, as opposed to an expression of repentance. What interests me in this morbid cautioning is its logic, the distinction between useful and futile repetition. The very idea of controlling a reflex. When some abrupt interruption catches us off guard, an automatic repetition will inevitably take place. Automatic yes, but it might be manipulated. I’m interested in the impossibility of true repetition, the possibility of rehearsing a reflex or hallucination. In those utterances and gestures that linger after major interruptions, having not figured their place yet. They linger detached from their context and function, in a chronological limbo at the threshold of real events. They do not belong and do not seek to; they exist outside history as little pockets of waste surrounding the big narratives. They move in circles. My tools are the most basic units of communication, a word, line or gesture; I squeeze out all their potential through rhetoric, ornament and repetition. Constantly overextending them beyond their limits. Working, with an essentially sadistic determination, to emphasise the ultimate futility of all action.”
